Hollyhock House was Wright's first Los Angeles project, it was completed in 1923. The House takes its name from the favorite flower of Aline Barnsdall who commissioned the build. The Hollyhock is used as a central theme to the house, with many symmetrical decorations adapting the plant's general appearance.
Hollyhock House is a wonderful combination of house and gardens, Wright's ingenious use of outside and inside space took full of advantage of the Los Angeles climate and gave access to some of the world's most iconic views - the Los Angeles Basin and the Hollywood Hills.
Over the years the buildings have been altered to meet the needs of the various occupiers. However a major rehabilitation started in 1974 and still continuing today has helped restore much of the building's original appearance. The inclusion of a modern theater, galleries and studios has brought the complex closer to its original goal as a functioning arts complex.
